Interdisciplinary Arts – Dance and Music

“I dance because there’s no greater feeling in the world than moving to a piece of music and letting the rest of the world disappear” – Kitty Klaus

The freedom and security from within, comes through finding yourself lost in dance. I have discovered this firsthand, as I have been dancing since I was three years old. Despite, my decision to be a composer and follow a musical career path, I have never forgotten my first interaction with the arts. Thus, I have decided that I’d love to compose music especially tailor- made for a choreographer’s purposes.

Collaboration has always been the key to exploring and being on the verge of new findings. I have been in the process of contacting numerous institutions, like the Boston Conservatory, Dance division to offer a collaborative proposal. I asked if any choreographers would be interested in working together with me, to write I would write original music for their movements. The music would be based on their thematic ideas for the dances and could be utilized within any platform or format.

When I first piqued an interest in composing for dance, I envisioned writing for contemporary dance or for classical ballets with a full orchestra and storyline. Over the last 50 years, there hasn’t been that much emphasis in creating music for the purposes of dance. The music used, generally is already composed, and the dancers thereafter make decisions and choreograph their movements to align with what already exists. I think it would be a wonderful to work hand in hand through the process with two different artistic approaches and perspectives from the beginning. I love the relationship, for example, that Stravinsky had with Vaslav Nijinsky, who was trained by the great Enrico Cechetti. They worked together from scratch. This is amazing and for example, take the rite of spring. It is still a famous ballet, danced throughout the world.

Thus I believe the bond between music and dance is very powerful. I would love to seek the possibilities of interdisciplinary focuses and have the opportunity of undertaking projects, like writing for a ballet or a number of songs for dance pieces in a musical. This would be such a highlight and passion of mine!
